P&O Ferries reduced its carbon footprint by 85,000 tons as it took advantage of new partnerships to sail less frequently and maximise the efficiency of its operations.

HMRC delays CDS export function 
 
HMRC has delayed the roll-out of its new customs platform for exports following a series of outages for imports that left traders furious. 
 
Customs Declaration Service (CDS) replaced Customs Handling Import and Export Freight (CHIEF) as the UK import platform this year, with exports expected to come online 31 January. 
 
Now, this has been pushed to 30 November “to allow for more testing”, and industry sources say the system may even be pushed back to 2024.

CONSTRUCTION STARTS AT DP WORLD LONDON GATEWAY 
 
DP World has announced that work has started on site to build a new fourth berth at its London Gateway smart logistics hub. 
 
The resilience of the UK supply chain will be strengthened by the £350m project, which builds on DP World’s £2bn investment in Britain over the last decade.

FIRST UK FREEPORT ACTIVITY AS STEEL CONSIGNMENT ARRIVES IN TEESSIDE 
 
A shipment of steel has now arrived at the Teesside Freeport, marking the first activity of a Freeport anywhere in the UK. 
 
Around 100 tonnes of steel were delivered to the South Bank area of Teesworks, which has been designated as a customs zone as part of the region’s Freeport – the biggest and first operational.

CDS Deadline Approaches 
 
The CDS deadlines are looming. Going by the current schedule, CHIEF will be withdrawn in two stages: 
 
After 30 September 2022, you won’t be able to make import declarations on CHIEF 
 
After 31 March 2023, you won’t be able to make export declarations on CHIEF 
 
HMRC recently sent letters to 220,000 GB VAT registered traders and although not all of them will be importers and or exporters, and many will use the services of a broker or forwarder, this communication is indicative of the lack of awareness – and lack of preparedness – for the impending move 
 
Port of Liverpool - Strike Action Confirmed 
 
Unite the Union has confirmed strike action is to take place at the Port of Liverpool between 06:00 Monday 19 September and 06:00 Monday 3 October. 
 
The move is designed to disrupt operations at the UK container port after a pay package of 8.3% was rejected by the union, and following demands for greater pay increases.
